Five Dance Studio Students Participate in KC Ballet’s Dancer for a Day

On August 7, 2014, five Dance Studio Dancers traveled to Kansas City to participate in the Kansas City Ballet’s Dancer for a Day program.

The students were able to do the following:

  • Took a dance class with Dance Studio alumna Miss Skyler Taylor as our teacher and Mrs. Linda Martin as our pianist
  • Saw the Kansas City Ballet professional company dancers taking a ballet class (they are very talented, wonderful dancers!)
  • Read a story, Dance Away, by George Shannon and then learned the rabbit’s dance from the story. We also made the story more exciting by adding music (East St. Louis Toodle—oo by Steely Dan) and instrument sounds.
  • Choreographed our own dance steps for “waking up” music (Marcia funebre from A Midsummer Night’s Dream by Mendelssohn), “joyful” music (Overture from A Midsummer Night’s Dream by Mendelssohn), “angry” music (Ritual Fire Dance by de Falla) and “grouchy” music (Capriccio Brillante on the Jota Aragonesa by Glinka.
  • Took a tour of the Bolender Center and explored the costume shop where we saw costumes for many different dancers and characters and also learned about the kinds of shoes that dancers wear
